Morgan sisters shut down Montrose; Martians win tourney

Goodrich’s softball team may have finally lost a couple games, but the Martians still enjoyed a productive week.
In a May 9 doubleheader, the Martians defeated Montrose 15-3 in the opener and 2-0 in the nightcap. Goodrich is currently 22-2 overall and 11-0 in league play.
In the opener, the Martians broke a 3-3 tie, scoring 12 runs in the top of the fifth, and the game was called due to the mercy rule after Montrose was shut down in the bottom of the fifth.
Jessica Morgan picked up the win to improve to 17-1 for the Martians. She allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits while striking out five.
Tara Garman led the Martians? offense, going 3-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored. Alyssa Bertrand went 3-for-3 with one RBI, while Kelsey Krych went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Goodrich’s Tori Morgan held the Rams to two hits in the nightcap, striking out five batters to improve to 4-1 on the season.
On May 7, the Martians, for the first time in school history, competed in the Chemical City Classic tournament in Midland, and won the tournament with a 10-inning, 7-4 win against Midland-Bullock Creek.
Jessica Morgan was voted the tournament’s outstanding defensive player after picking up three wins for the Martians.
With the two teams tied 1-1 at the end of seven innings, the international tie breaker was used for extra innings, in which a player who made the last out in the previous inning is placed on second base.
Goodrich scored twice in the eighth inning. With Krych starting at second base, she was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Blaze Wilson. An infield single by Julie Owen and a walk to Tara Garman loaded the bases. Krych and Owen then scored on a single by Kortni Elsworth.
Midland-Bullock Creek then came back in the bottom of the eighth inning with two runs to tie the game. After neither team scored in the ninth inning, Goodrich opened the 10th inning with four runs.
With Ashley Short starting at second base, Krych sacrificed her to third base. After two outs, Owen singled, Garman doubled, Elsworth singled, and Alisha Bergeron drove in the final two runs with a double.
Even though Midland-Bullock Creek scored one run in the bottom of the 10th inning, it was not enough, and Goodrich clinched the tournament win.
The Martians advanced to the championship game with a 13-6 win against Rochester Adams in their first game of the tournament, and a 5-4 win against Midland-HH Dow in their second game.
In earlier action, the Martians swept visiting Lake Fenton 5-0 and 9-5 on May 3; lost their first two games of the season when they dropped a May 4 doubleheader to Fenton, 7-1 and 12-2; and bounced back to defeat visiting Mt. Morris in a May 5 doubleheader, winning 12-1 and 11-0.
