Public hearing Sept. 22 for shopping center

Concept plans for a proposed 99,951-square-foot retail shopping center next door to Meijer are the subject of a 7:30 p.m. Thursday, September 22 public hearing before the Oxford Township Planning Commission.
Located on the east side of M-24 on an 11.47-acre parcel between Meijer and East Market Street, the proposed shopping center is meant to be a ‘physical, aesthetic and functional extension of Oxford Village,? according to its potential developer Aragona Properties, of Clinton Township.
Dubbed ‘The Promenade at Waterstone,? the proposed center consists of six buildings containing 86,851 square feet of retail space, plus a 5,600-square-foot chain restaurant and 7,500-square foot day care facility, according to the conceptual site plan submitted to the township.
‘The variable and distinctive storefronts of this development provide each shop located within to express their unique identities,? according to Aragona Properties.
Running north-south straight through the heart of the shopping center would be a 37-foot wide outdoor promenade along the storefronts containing possible outdoor cafe seating, fountain, planters, ‘doggy park,? benches, clock tower and child play area.
This large promenade, along with the numerous sidewalks in all directions within the development, are meant to ‘provide easy and safe pedestrian arrival by foot or bike.?
To accommodate motorists, the proposed center would have nearly 500 parking spaces.
Overall, the proposed shopping center is trying to invoke an image ‘reminiscent of a public square housed in downtowns throughout the world,? according to Aragona Properties.
