Gridiron star earns academic honor

Congratulations to Nick Murray, a senior at Oxford High School, for receiving the honorable Academic All-State in Football award for 2005.
Murray was one of 24 high school football players in the state of Michigan chosen for this honor.
The Academic All-State award goes to those football players who excel academically, earn a high score on the ACT and start at least eight times in a game and play for three quarters of the game.
The award is sponsored by the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association.
A surprised Murray found out January 3 about this achievement but said he ‘didn’t really expect to get it.?
‘I sent it in, but I didn’t really have that high of expectations to get it,? he said.
The 3.97 GPA student scored a 30 on his ACT and was a captain of the varsity football team. OHS football Coach Bud Rowley said he was an obvious pick.
‘Nick Murray was First Team All-League, Second Team All-County, he was one of our team captains, All-State Honorable Mention,? he said. ‘He had many, many honors, but he’s a very, very fine academic student.?
As Murray’s coach, Rowley said the award makes him ‘feel good? and is something Murray will ‘get to take with him forever.?
‘That’s really an award for him because he worked so hard academically and on the football field.? Rowley said.
Some students have trouble balancing their academics with athletics, but Murray, who enjoys his AP Calculus class most of all, said it wasn’t too hard for him to do.
‘You just go to practice, go home and do your homework,? he said. ‘It’s an honor to get it.?
