OAC showcases next generation with student exhibit

A variety of work, unlike any other the Orion Art Center has the rest of the year, is now on display.
The OAC is featuring their annual student exhibit, running until Feb. 17th.
OAC Board of Directors Vice President Sue Welch said there are no limitations to the artwork that is placed on display, which ranges from traditional paintings, to tissue paper work, to computer- generated pieces.
The exhibit features the work of Orion and Oxford students, in grades K-12.
‘This is the fourth year that we’ve done the exhibit and the second year with Oxford,? Welch said.
‘We have about 85-90 pieces on display,? she said.
Judges, who are also members of the board, picked 20 pieces that were recently on display at the OAC’s Snowflake Ball.
‘We get it there so they can be seen,? Welch said.
In addition, the entire exhibit will reopen at the Orion Township municipal offices, from Feb. 20-March 20.
‘This is our first year doing that,? said Welch.
Jon Hazlett, an art teacher at two Oxford schools, put eight pieces on display.
‘It’s a great opportunity and I think all of the parents showed up to see the work,? Hazlett said of the strong support his students have had.
The teachers are responsible for selecting work to be put on display and getting everything to Welch, weeks in advance.
Welch noted that shrink-wrapping for every piece that needed it was donated by Accent on Art in Lake Orion.
Hazlett said his process for selecting pieces was pretty simple. He looked for unique works that went above and beyond his expectations.
The work of Hazlett’s students, and many others in the area, can be viewed Tues.-Fri., 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., through the Feb. 17.
The OAC also features evening open houses on Wednesdays, from 5-8 p.m.
