She’s dancing her way to Texas

A Waldon Middle School student will get a chance to participate in intensive dance workshops in Texas this summer after winning an $850 scholarship.
Cristi Fisher, 12, won the scholarship after undergoing an extensive audition process. The scholarship was awarded by the dance group ‘Adrenaline,? which travels around the world.
Fisher, who dances at the Tina Marie School of Dance in Warren & Shelby Township, attended the Adrenaline workshop in Troy, which included four auditions.
‘They showed me a routine and I had to learn it,? Fisher said.
Fisher was aided by the fact that she had recently competed in a similar scholarship competition.
In November, she placed second in ballet in the Dance Masters of Michigan, held in Lansing.
For that showing, she won a small monetary amount, plus an invite to return to the next Dance Masters.
‘My first one was definitely more challenging,? Fisher said. ‘I had gotten used to it a little by Adrenaline.?
Fisher has been dancing for nine years and the past two years competitively, and is excited about the upcoming trip to Texas.
‘There are two programs that I can choose from,? she said, noting that one was lyrical and jazz and the other encompasses all styles of dance.
‘I think I’m going to go to the one that has all types of dance,? she added, but said her mind was not completely made up just yet.
In addition to doing lyrical and jazz dancing, Fisher said she also enjoys hip-hop.
‘I want to become a Rockette or some type of professional dancer,? she said, and also has aspirations to work with wildlife.
‘She dances two nights a week, plus all day Saturday,? said her mother, Lurene. ‘It’s a big commitment.?
Lurene also pointed out Cristi’s strong academic record, which includes all As at Waldon.
‘I’m really proud of that fact,? Lurene said.
In addition to all of her studies in school and her work at Tina Marie, Cristi has come up with a solo dance and will be competing in four different competitions in the coming weeks across the metro Detroit area.
These competitions include three in late March and early April at various high schools and culminates with the American Dance Awards April 28-30.
