The Brandon School Board voted 5 to 1 on Monday night to not renew Community Education Director June Wuopio’s contract. Trustee Karyn Milligan was absent and Trustee D’Anna Keeble voted no.
The vote comes after the board approved a resolution to consider non-renewal of both the athletic director’s contract and the community education director’s position at the Feb. 13 school board meeting. Since then several residents have expressed concern regarding the decision to discontiune both contracts.
‘I don’t see how this decision is financially sound,? said Keeble. ‘June has brought in millions in grants and she is being cut for a projected $30 to $35,000 savings. Are we creating turmoil with this decision? Can you live with this??
Beth Nuccio board president responded.
‘The decision is never easy when money is tight,? said Nuccio. We have to look at the larger picture we’re going be facing $1.4 million in cuts next year.?
Wuopio had been with the district for more than 25 years.
