Police, library millages on August ballot

There will be plenty to consider in regards to Independence Township for the August election ? including two millage renewals.
At the April 18 regular board meeting, trustees approved ballot language for both the police and library millages.
The police millage, after Headlee rollback, is 2.0547 mills. The original millage was authorized by voters in 2002 at 2.5641.
Township officials state in the ballot language the amount of revenue expected for collection is $3,385,434. The township currently contracts for 29 Oakland County Sheriff’s office employees in the Independence Township substation.
The library millage is 0.6910 mills, rolled back by Headlee from 0.7500 approved in 2002 by voters. According to the ballot language, the township will collect around $1,138,529.
‘This is a renewal only. There is no increase in either millage amount. The only new revenue would be from new construction or inflation,? said Finance Director Susan Hendricks during the April 18 meeting.
Treasurer Jim Wenger stated during the meeting the Headlee Amendment will continue to rollback the amount each year until 2010.
‘We will need to do a truth in taxation or ask voters for a new millage to increase the amount, but we’re not doing that,? said Wenger.
