Track schedule heating up, regionals next

With the MHSAA regionals right around the corner for the boys and girls varsity track teams, the two squads headed a few miles north for the annual Oxford Invite over the weekend.
That invite, coupled with two big league dual meets, made for the biggest track and field week to date.
At Oxford, the girls team lapped the competition, recording a whopping 180 points. The nearest competition, from Pontiac Northern, had 91 points.
The team won nine of the 16 events, including two wins a piece from Alex Hartley (discus and shot put), and Alicia Hartley (100- and 300-meter hurdles).
Katie Valko won the long jump, while Rene Reilly took the 800 run, and Sara Lieblein took the 3200 run.
The LO relay teams were tops in the 1600 and 3200 events.
The boys team took third at the invite, with their 108 points putting them one behind Utica Eisenhower, and 10 behind champion U-D Jesuit.
Ben Hopkins won the high jump, while Andy Tonkovich took the 300-meter hurdles. Rob Shinouskis won the 3200 run as well for LO.
Earlier in the week, the teams took a trip to OAA I foe Troy on May 9.
The boys squad knocked off the hosts, 84-44, while the girls prevailed, 65-63.
Two days later, the teams posted wins at Rochester Adams, with the boys again winning by 40 points, and the girls coasting to a 79-49 victory.
Both teams will compete in regional action at Holly on May 19, with the OAA league meet and county championships to follow next week.
