Powers Catholic outduels Martian kickers

Goodrich’s varsity girls soccer team played a different caliber of team in districts than what they were used to during the regular season.
Flint Powers soundly defeated the Martians with a 4-0 victory in a district semifinal game Thursday, June 1 at Powers. The loss ended the Martians? season at 11-3-2.
The Chargers scored their first goal of the game with about 18 minutes left in the first half, then scored their second goal to take a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Goodrich assistant coach Josh Watson said the Chargers won every 50-50 battle for control of the ball and took the fight to the Martians.
‘We were just out-physicalled,? he said. ‘They won every ball. It seems they kind of intimidated us a little.?
Watson said in order for that trend to change next season, the Martians will have to step up their level of competition.
‘In my opinion, our nonleague games need to be tougher, against better teams, to prepare us for the physical nature of the playoffs,? he said. ‘Some of our games, we were winning 8-0 and 9-0, and you don’t really learn anything,? he said.
