The Commander Cody Band will take the stage at the Canterbury Castle Banquet Center at Olde World Canterbury Village in Orion Township on Aug. 24, headlining a party that is not to be missed.
Commander Cody, which formed in Ann Arbor in 1968, is led by the Commander himself, George Frayne, on piano and vocals, along with Steve Barbuto on drums and vocals, Rick Mullen on bass, and Mark Emerick on guitar and vocals.
The band performs rockabilly/country swing style music, with ‘boogie-woogie? piano. Their biggest hit came in 1972, when the twangy ‘Hot Rod Lincoln? reached the Top Ten.
Their 1974 album ‘Live from Deep in the Heart of Texas? was named as one of Rolling Stone’s 100 greatest albums of all time.
Commander Cody also received an Emmy for their MTV video ‘Two Triple Cheese, Side Order of Fries,? which is now in Rolling Stone’s Video Hall of Fame, and the Museum of Modern Art Video Archives.
The party at Canterbury Castle will include a full bar. Doors will open at 7 p.m., and Commander Cody will perform at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20, and are on sale now, as well as at the door.
Canterbury Castle is hoping to start offering themed parties on a regular basis, drawing in national acts such as Commander Cody to entertain.
Promoter Bob Amberg is a regular at Canterbury Castle, and said he saw a lot of potential in the venue.
‘It’s an elegant place,? he said. ‘And I thought something like this was needed on this side of town.?
Amberg said he hopes to bring a lot of different musical styles to the Castle.
‘They already have great local musicians performing at the (Wildwood) tavern, and I’d like to get national acts to perform here, to draw more attention to Canterbury Village,? he said.
Amberg, a Commander Cody fan himself, said the band puts on an energetic show, and often gets members of the audience involved.
A special parking area will also be available the night of the show for displaying classic cars, in keeping with the ‘Cruisin? to the Castle,? theme.
