For the West Bloomfield football program, spotting Lake Orion an early lead was one of the ‘Wurst? things they could do. But the Dragons? first touchdown was just a sign of Moore things to come.
Receivers David Wurst and Cole Moore each caught two touchdown passes as LO raced out to a 28-0 lead and steamrolled the Lakers 35-7 at Dragon Stadium on Sept. 21.
The Laker strategy focused around stopping Aaron Allen and the Dragon running attack. Allen was held to a season-low 41 yards, but the two senior wideouts could not be contained.
‘They’re tough to cover,? said Coach Chris Bell. ‘When they were playing eight or nine guys in the box and inviting us to pass, those are great matchups for us.?
Moore led the way with seven catches for 126 yards, but credited his accurate quarterback, junior Chris Lum, for making his job easy.
‘He was throwing the ball like a maniac today,? Moore said. ‘He was just on.?
Lum completed 14 of his 21 passing attempts for 259 yards and four scores.
Wurst finished with three receptions for 58 yards, and tight end Mike Tuzik added three catches for 56 yards.
It was a Lum to Wurst connection that opened the scoring, followed by a pair of drives that were capped off by Moore.
That gave the Dragons a 21-0 lead at the break, and when Wurst opened the second half with a 31-yard TD grab, the game was out of reach for West Bloomfield.
Moore and Wurst now have eight touchdowns apiece through five games, all Dragon blowout victories.
‘You can never get sick of it,? Moore said of scoring touchdowns, but insisted there is no competition between the two for season supremacy.
Allen scored the final Dragon TD on a five-yard scamper in the fourth quarter, but Bell said the running game must improve if the Dragons are to reach their potential.
‘There’s going to come a time where we’ll need to eat some clock and run the ball,? he said.
On the other side of the ball, the coach was very impressed.
‘Defensively, I thought this was our best effort of the season,? Bell said.
The Lakers were held off the scoreboard until the fourth quarter, in large part due to the efforts of senior Josh Allison.
Allison led the way with 15 tackles, including one sack, not an easy task for a nose guard against an offense that routinely ran the ball to the outside.
‘He never takes a play off,? Bell said. ‘He’s a special player.?
Jake Gaudard and Evan Groh had eight tackles each and Nick Dunstan added seven tackles and an interception for the Dragons.
Lake Orion travels to Birmingham Groves on Friday and then returns home for the annual homecoming game against Farmington Hills Harrison next week.
