It was a clash of state-ranked Division 3 teams when the Goodrich varsity boys soccer team traveled to Macomb Lutheran North for their Oct. 17 district opener.
Unfortunately for the eighth-ranked Martians, Lutheran North, ranked sixth in Division 3, emerged triumphant with a 2-1 victory, eliminating the Martians from postseason play. Goodrich finished at 15-3 for the season.
Lutheran North scored midway through the first period and then again in the second period to take a 2-0 lead, then Goodrich’s David Garr scored the Martians? lone goal on a penalty kick with 4:28 remaining in the game.
‘Their players were very all-around skilled and aggressive,? Goodrich coach Evan Huizenga said. ‘We didn’t play bad ? they just played better than us on that day. It’s always tough to end the season, but to lose to a team of that quality is a lot easier to take.?
Huizenga also said the Martians took the loss particularly hard immediately following the game.
‘Obviously, it’s discouraging that they won’t get to play together again,? he said. ‘They were pretty silent and sitting on the bench in disbelief. They were not ready to finish the season.?
