Hot streaks are something to ride like a brand new snowboard, and the Clarkston wrestlers just picked out a brand new K-2.
The Wolves downed Troy Athens and Auburn Hills Avondale in a double-dual meet at Avondale on Dec. 6 to improve to 8-0 to start the season.
Clarkston pinned the Red Hawks 53-15 and later took down the Yellow Jackets 59-7.
Seven Clarkston wrestlers are also undefeated individually: Alex Popp (130 pounds), Tyler Schneider (135), Eric Butterfield (140), Colton Tweed (152), Bryant Craft (160), Adam Lauzun (171) and Tommy Ellsworth (189).
Against Athens, the Wolves trailed 12-6 before Mike Maguire pinned John Keyes of the Red Hawks to put Clarkston up for good.
Against the Yellow Jackets, Clarkston went up early and got some points when Avondale did not place any wrestles in four weight classes.
Clarkston Coach Joe DeGain said the team’s opponents served up good competition for the Wolves, but the toughest competition is yet to come.
‘Both schools sent some good athletes and our guys were ready to go. They didn’t overlook anybody,? DeGain said.
We’re excited. The (younger) guys are starting to gain experience. Their confidence is rolling,? he added.
‘We’re still yet to wrestle a ranked team in the state. As excited as everyone is, they still have to look forward to wrestling some ranked competition to test ourselves,? DeGain said of the Wolves, who are currently ranked sixth in the state.
DeGain said this was the best start he could remember in his four years with the team.
