Ortonville- The Village Skate Park reopened March 27, a few weeks early, after equipment repairs and a safety inspection.
However, after a dozen complaints prior to the opening about kids trespassing at the closed park, and several complaints last year from neighbors about misbehavior including profanity, littering, substance abuse and more, officials are reiterating the rules for the park located at Cedar and Ball streets.
‘Parents and kids should know that the village and sheriff’s department are working together for a no tolderance policy, where the police can take their bikes or skateboards and auction them off if the kids are trespassing or breaking the rules,? said Brandon Recreation Director Fred Waybrant.
Sgt. Michael Searing confirms the policy is being considered, and any possessions used in the commission of a crime can be seized.
‘To be in the park when the gate is locked is trespassing and it will be dealt with accordingly,? said Village Manager Ed Coy, who noted the problems from last year have not been completely resolved. ?(The park) is great for kids. It’s unfortunate a few people cause problems.?
Waybrant agrees, adding that the village has more good kids than bad ones. Contrary to rumors, Waybrant said the skate park will not be moved to the township park being developed at Oakwood and Hadley roads.
‘It’s better in the village, more accessible to school kids,? he said. ‘It’s a great after-school program when the weather is right.?
The Village Skate Park is open from 8 a.m.- 8 p.m. daily. Bikes are allowed in the park on Tuesdays and Thursdays only.
