Water is just fine, despite violation

Residents across Orion Township and the Village of Lake Orion might have spotted a drinking water notice in some public places, or perhaps in The Review’s legal notices, in the past few weeks.
That notice, however, is nothing to be concerned about, according to Village Department of Public Works Superintendent Mike Olson.
Olson said the notice has nothing to do with the quality of the water that was coming out of the Lake Huron Water Treatment Plant, which services the area.
‘It was a technical violation that the Huron Plant had,? he said.
‘The water is fine,? Olson added. ‘If there was a problem, there would’ve been a ‘Do Not Drink? campaign started immediately.?
According to the DPW notice, the addition of phosphate dosages to the water was below the established minimum for 14 days in January and February.
‘All the phosphate does is act as a corrosion control for the pipe,? Olson said, emphasizing that the water leaving the plant was perfectly normal.
‘Public Act 399 requires that water departments send out the letters when there is a violation,? he said, calling the letter a ‘formality.?
The violation was considered a ‘Tier 2,? according to Olson, which means there was no health hazard.
‘If it were a ‘Tier 1,? then there is potential to harm your health,? he said.
Olson noted that there have been no issues with the phosphate dosages since the incident and that there is not, or was never, a need to boil the water or take other corrective actions.
