Hitting their home lake for the last time of the season, the Spray Masters Water Ski Show team graced Big Lake Aug. 14 and 16 with ‘A Boatload of Blues.?
‘It went very well. (There was) a good crowd and a good response from what I saw,? team member Logan Lawson said.
‘Everybody skied well and we had a lot of good showmanship. Everyone came together as a team and delivered one of its best shows.?
The performance Thursday was for the Davisburg Rotary Club and was the group’s best of the season, said team member Mike O’Donnell.
O’Donnell said the team uses videotapes of previous performances to improve their routines.
‘They improve show to show,? he said.
‘The flow is a lot better and practice makes perfect and we’re achieving that at the end of the season. Everyone knows what acts they’re in and the costumes they need. They know where they need to be more so at the end of the season,? Lawson said.
‘Boatload? is mirrored after the ‘Blues Brothers? film starring Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi as Elwood and Jake Blues. Spray Masters incorporate themes from the movie into their ski routines and dry-land performance.
Spray Masters boasts a membership of more than 60 of all ages. The group recently added a boy not yet 18 months old and ages of other members range into the 60s.
The team also welcomed two new members ages 6 and 7, into the show.
‘The fact they joined two weeks ago and are progressing so fast is awesome to see,? Lawson said.
In addition to having members of all ages, the Spray Masters? roster is comprised of families from all over Oakland County. The team’s finals two shows, on Lake Voorheis and Watkins Lake, are a chance for members to show off for friends and family.
‘This is their summer. They enjoy being at practice, they’re eager to learn things,? O’Donnell said.
‘It gives them a chance to show their neighbors what they do for the summer.?
Spray Masters train during the cold-weather months at Andersonville Elementary and they hit the water in early May.
The Spray Masters five-man jump team garnered national acclaim by placing third at the national competition earlier this month.
‘It’s always nice to be represented nationally,? O’Donnell said.
