If you have visited the Orion Public Library recently you may have noticed some familiar faces smiling down on you and promoting reading.
Some may have been professional athletes, such as Tony Hawk, and others might be a little more familiar to you, like Lake Orion schools Superintendent Christine Lehman, Village Manager JoAnn Van Tassel and Township Clerk Jill Bastian.
According to Adult Librarian Beth Sheridan, the library purchased a set of ‘READ? posters, featuring celebrities, from the American Library Association (ALA).
From the ALA posters came the idea to develop local READ posters under the direction of Sheridan.
‘We wanted to do local celebrities,? Sheridan said, noting that they contacted various individuals within the schools, the village and the township.
The individuals chose a book that was one of the their favorites, and then posed for a picture that was then converted into posters that can be seen hanging throughout the library.
‘I chose ‘A Tale of Two Cities? because it was the first novel that grabbed hold of my feelings and thoughts, allowing me to experience the events of the story,? said Lake Orion High School Principal Todd Dunckley.
According to Dunckley, posing for the poster was a fun experience and he enjoyed ‘playing a mock celebrity.?
‘My kids are young enough to think I am famous,? he added, joking that he might hang a copy of his poster in his basement to entertain friends with.
According to Sheridan, most participants felt the same way as Dunckley, both enjoying the experience and being happy with the posters that were created.
‘The main idea is to promote reading,? Sheridan added, saying that the READ posters are a fun way of doing it, and people can look up and see individuals that theyrecognize with their favorite book.
‘It was one more aspect of the fun and creative things the folks at the library do,? Dunckley said.
The READ posters, featuring both national and local celebrities, can be seen hanging throughout the library.
