Charity poker tournament to benefit splash park

Come play some Texas Hold’em poker and help fund a township splash park while you’re at it.
On Friday, Feb. 29, the Oxford Kiwanis Club, Lions Club and Rotary Club will host a Charity Texas Hold’em Tournament at Boulder Pointe Golf Club and Conference Center to benefit the building of a $390,000, handicap accessible splash park at Seymour Lake Township Park this summer.
A splash park is a special area at a park where pipes and other fun aquatic features spray, splash and mist water on children during the hot summer months.
So far, the Oxford Twp. Parks and Rec. Commission has agreed to contribute $100,000 toward the project, but more money is needed.
Ron Davis, Director of Oxford Twp. Parks and Rec., said they’re very close to securing a $240,000 grant from the Michigan Recreation and Park Association, and a $50,000 grant from the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan.
Davis has to submit one more round of documentation to the association by Feb. 13 and he will find out if Oxford secured the $240,000 grant by Feb. 20.
The local service clubs have agreed to raise the remaining $10,000 amount, assuming both grants are secured.
‘If we don’t get the grants, we’ll have to be going back to a grassroots effort like we did with the (Kid’s Kingdom),? he said.
At the Texas Hold’em tournament, players have the chance to win up to $5,000 in cash prizes, and can participate in a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction with prizes like spa and salon packages and sports memorabilia.
Attendees can also enjoy a walking masseuse and a cigar sale.
Dinner will be served from 7-9 p.m. Registration for the tournament will begin at 5 p.m. and the game will start promptly at 6 p.m.
Attendees can purchase a Player’s Pass, which includes food, two drinks and all events for $200, or they can purchase a Splash Pass, which includes everything except the poker tournament for $40 a person or $70 a couple (all ticket sales are tax deductible).
