There was a lot of love going around on Feb. 10 and it came in the shape of hair.
Rumourz Hair Salon, of Lake Orion, hosted their sixth annual Locks of Love benefit.
Cold temperatures didn’t prevent many donors from coming out to Rumourz to donate both money and hair. In all, 13 ponytails, with the total of 99.25 inches of hair, were donated to make hair prosthetics for children with medical hair loss.
Most of the Locks of Love recipients have lost their hair due to a medical condition known as alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. According to the salon, these prostheses help to restore the children’s self-esteem and self-confidence, which enables them to face the world and their peers.
Many children, along with adults, donated their hair to help make a difference for these disadvantaged children.
The longest ponytail measured 19 inches and was donated by Jennifer Moore, of Oxford. She won a gift basket from the merchants of Lakeview Plaza containing a white teddy bear, red heart candles and a red Zippo ink pen donated by the Tobacco Gallery, as well as a variety of gift certificates donated by Lake Orion Health Foods, Mannie’s Bagel & Deli, Vannelli Express, Subway, Kerrie Harter (Nail Professional) and Rumourz Hair Salon.
The staff at Rumourz Hair Salon, consisting of hairstylists and support staff, gave of their time and talents to make the sixth annual Rumourz Hair Salon benefit a success for Locks of Love.
The salon will be hosting their seventh annual cut-a-thon on Feb. 8, 2009.
