MEAP scores ‘encouraging? for LO, state

Michigan Education Assessment Program (MEAP) scores once again show Lake Orion students above the average.
‘We have done very well in the district,? said Linda Glowaz, testing assessment consultant for Lake Orion schools. ‘We always exceed the state and this year, we exceeded the county in all areas.?
Michigan students, third through ninth grade, were tested in October 2007 on skills learned through the end of the previous year.
For students in third through eighth, this included testing on mathmatics, reading and writing, as well as science for fifth and eighth graders and social studies for sixth graders. Ninth graders were tested only on social studies.
Statewide, for the third straight year, math scores have risen in elementary and middle schools at every grade level (third through eighth) except fifth grade, and Lake Orion scores reflected the same.
Glowaz credited the aggressive math programs that Lake Orion has put into place as the key for this success, noting that as the district implements aggressive programs in other subject areas, there will likely be an increase in those scores as well.
Three years ago, the State Board of Education adopted Grade Level Content Expectations, which provide teachers and students with a detailed focus on which skills should be known and developed by the end of each grade, in both mathmatics and English language arts (ELA).
‘This is very encouraging,? said State Board of Education President Kathleen N. Straus. ‘We are beginning to see the results of the foundation we’ve established to help Michigan’s children succeed.?
This past year, the board approved the K-8 Grade Level Content Expectations for science and social studies as well.
‘We expect to see similar gains in science and social studies as the new standards begin to be implemented in every classroom across the state,? Straus said.
Glowaz noted the MEAP is really only one component of testing students? progress and growth, and it really doesn’t assess students? writing, as they are only given two writing prompts to work with. Plus, she said, this portion of the MEAP will change next year, as they will only be offering one writing prompt and more multiple choice questions.
‘Next year, we might come up with a completely different set of results of what our students know,? she added, noting they might not be able to make a fair comparision between the years.
