Baseball improves to 19-2

The Dragons did not play the role of Juliet on Monday, as they shutout Romeo 5-0 behind a complete-game effort from Derrick Berriman.
Berriman threw just 76 pitches, striking out five. He got plenty of help from his offense, led by Josh Deeg 3-for-3, Drew Ordakowski 3-for-4 and Erik Knoblock 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The team improved to 19-2 with the win.
On Saturday, the Dragons dropped just their second game of the season and were shutout for the first time, falling to host Midland 2-0. But the team recovered to top Grandville 4-1 later in the day.
Knoblock allowed just two runs in a complete-game effort against Midland, but the Dragon offense could muster only two hits all game. Mike Musary earned the win against Grandville, scattering six hits in seven innings of work.
The Dragons learned last Friday that they will get a bye in the first round of district action. The team will play the winner of Oxford and Rochester Adams (to be played Tuesday, May 27 at LO) on Saturday, May 30 at 10 a.m. The winner of that game will play the winner of the Rochester/Stoney Creek contest at 3 p.m.
Also on Friday, the Dragons improved to 8-0 in league action by topping West Bloomfield, 11-4, at home.
‘We’re in pretty good position right now as we head down the home stretch,? Coach Andy Schramek said.
Deeg struck out six in over six innings of work. Musary went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Connor Mielock went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Mielock came on to record the final two outs for the Dragons on the mound, as Deeg threw 111 pitches in the game (he threw 90 in the teams 6-5 win over Troy earlier in the week).
‘That’s the Josh we’re used to seeing,? Schramek said. ‘He had pretty good command of his pitches today and, aside from start of the seventh inning, he kept his pitch count down.?
The Dragons play host to Clarkston today and a podcast will be available tonight at lakeorionreview.com.
The team can wrap up the OAA I title with wins over Clarkston and Royal Oak (Friday at RO).
