Connor Mielock threw what is believed to be the first perfect game in school history against rival Clarkston last Wednesday, but that was the end of the highlights for the Dragons on the week.
Mielock’s 48-pitch effort helped Lake Orion to a five-inning 11-0 victory over the Wolves. He struck out nine and only threw nine pitches out of the strike zone.
‘It wasn’t that nice outside, but I felt pretty good on the mound,? Mielock said. ‘You get an advantage on our field because of the trees out there.?
‘My arm felt real good,? he added. ‘It was the best I’ve thrown all year. It feels really good against our crosstown rival.?
Meanwhile, the offense stepped up by scoring seven runs in the third inning, and four more in the fourth, a cause aided by Andy Mosier’s two hits and four RBI.
The Dragons ventured on the road Friday and had their undefeated league record ruined by Royal Oak.
The Ravens? Ron Sulewski pitched no-hit ball into the sixth inning, as the Dragons fell 8-2.
After splitting a Saturday doubleheader with Utica Eisenhower, winning 7-5 and falling 10-9, the Dragons welcomed Rochester Adams in a makeup of their May 2 rainout.
Mielock again toed the rubber for Lake Orion, looking to clinch the outright OAA I title.
But Adams, which came in at 8-2, had visions of earning a tie and avenging their 15-8 loss in nine innings in mid-April.
The visitors did just that, coming away with a 1-0 victory behind a shutout effort from three pitchers.
Mielock picked up his first loss of the season in tough fashion, striking out 12 in a complete game performance.
Adams scored their run in the top of the sixth inning when Andrew Waszak singled home Cory Colucci from second, on a shot off the glove of outstretched third baseman Eric Knoblock into the leftfield bullpen area.
It was one of only five hits surrendered by Mielock.
‘It was a great high school baseball game,? Coach Andy Schramek said. ‘We had positions where we could’ve scored runs and we just didn’t do it.?
The Dragons stranded 10 baserunners as Stephan Anderson (four innings), Tom Hansen (two innings) and J.D. Osborne combined for the shutout, with Hansen getting the win and Osborne the save.
‘I didn’t think we hit the ball that badly,? Schramek added. ‘Our approach at the plate was pretty good, we just hit it right at them.?
The win moved Adams into a tie with Lake Orion at 9-2. The Dragons can earn at least a share of the league title by beating Farmington in another makeup game next Wednesday. That game begins at 4:30 on Dragon turf.
Meanwhile the team will co-host their annual tournament with Oxford this weekend, with action slated for Friday afternoon and Saturday.
