Dragons ready to defend title

Lake Orion welcomed in four opponents during the annual Orion/Oxford event last Friday and Saturday. Only the hosts went home happy.
The Dragons were the only team to go 4-0 on the weekend, beating Catholic Central 10-4 and Walled Lake Western 4-1 on Friday. They then topped Lowell 7-0 Saturday morning, in a battle 2-0 squads, and defeated Swartz Creek 7-1 to wrap up the title.
The 4-0 weekend ended a rough patch for the Dragons, which included three losses in four games.
‘When you play a lot of games, you’re going to go through a little lull,? said Coach Andy Schramek. ‘This weekend we got our bats going. It was a true team effort.?
With the victories, the Dragons improved to 26-5, setting a new regular season win record, and they can add to that in a rare Wednesday morning game with Farmington.
A victory would also give Lake Orion the outright OAA I title, their first outright league championship since 2002. The team has already secured a share of the title for the first time since 2005.
With district play on Saturday, Schramek expects to use at least three pitchers in the Farmington game, in an effort to keep everybody fresh.
Connor Mielock, Josh Deeg and Mike Musary are all likely to get some work, with all pitching complete game efforts in the Orion/Oxford tournament.
The trio allowed a combined nine hits in 18 innings of work, including Mielock’s one-hit shutout effort against Lowell.
In his last three outings, all complete games, Mielock has struck out 28 while allowing six hits and one run.
He is likely to get the ball when the Dragons take on either Oxford or Adams on Saturday at noon at Lake Orion (for details on who they’ll be facing, check out www.lakeorionreview.com).
Rochester battles Stoney Creek at 10 a.m. in the other Saturday semifinal, with the final set for later that afternoon.
Schramek thanked the parents for their help at the weekend tournament, as well as the staff at Oxford for organizing the event.
