The Lake Orion Church of Christ will run their annual Mission Possible program July 27 through Aug. 2.
The program is a stay-home mission trip, where church volunteers help local residents in need with home repairs and other projects they can’t take on by themselves.
‘We have about 20 jobs now, but could use another 10,? said Church Elder John Swantek.
Some of the work came about through the church’s relationship with Love, INC, which informed them of possible mission work. But more project ideas are needed, given the expected turnout of church volunteers.
‘We want to help people that are really in need,? Swantek said.
The concept of having a local mission run by the church came about a few years ago.
‘We had two years in a row where we sent missionaries to Panama,? Swantek recalled. ‘It was difficult for some church members to participate, so we thought, ‘why not do it at the local level???
Upwards of 20 families will participate, with many camping at the church throughout the week. Swantek said there will be between five and eight different teams of workers, of all different ages.
In addition, the church will welcome guests from some other churches, hoping to start a similar mission project in their own communities.
‘We think it’d be a great blessing to the area to have other churches do similar things,? Swantek said. ‘This is a pretty huge undertaking.?
Many of the volunteers are experienced in a variety of fields, which comes in handy when taking on projects like roofing, painting, landscaping, window replacement and plumbing, among others.
‘People with some talent have to be available to accomplish something like this,? Swantek noted.
Other mission activities, specifically geared for the younger volunteers, include taking goodies to area nursing centers and helping clean up area parks.
