Lake Orion High School golfer Cameron Beeler’s strong first round wasn’t quite enough to make the cut at the Michigan Junior State Amateur on July 28, but the soon-to-be senior was impressive nonetheless.
In a field featuring two-dozen All-State high school golfers, many on their way to the collegiate ranks, Beeler shot a 73 at Forest Akers in East Lansing, tying for seventh place among the 78 participants.
In his second round, that same afternoon, Beeler missed the 36-hole cut by just three strokes, posting an 81.
‘I went through a tough four-hole stretch on the back nine during the afternoon round that cost me the opportunity to play in the match play portion of the tournament,? he said. ‘It was very hot in the afternoon, and this was my first tournament where 36 holes are all played in the same day.?
Still, Beeler said the experience should help him as he prepares for a big senior year leading LOHS.
‘It was a real physical and mental challenge as we played the course from the back tees at Forest Akers West, measuring 7,000 yards, but it was still a great experience.?
Beeler was named MVP of the LOHS team this spring, earned All-League honors, made the Second Team All-County and won two qualifying tournaments on the Top 50 Jr. Tour this summer.
He qualified for the junior amateur event by placing fourth at Fieldstone (one of six regional qualifiers across the state), back in late June.
Beeler has worked with swing instructor Marc White from Oakhurst Country Club for the last three years, and has played golf since he was 5-years-old learning the game from his father.
He also maintains a 3.5 GPA, and also works at Oxford Hills Golf Course.
