Thulin’s picture flies in to Beaumont building

Air Force Pilot Ryan Thulin, a 2000 graduate of Lake Orion High School, became the seventh military personnel member to be honored by the Beaumont Medical Center on Lapeer Road.
Thulin’s picture was unveiled in the building’s lobby last week during a brief ceremony. It will remain near the entrance for the next month.
The program honoring local military members was started last year by Michelle Schmalz.
‘I am so proud to pay tribute to this young man of 26 years,? Schmalz said. He deserves each and every stop, stare and prayer I know he will receive while his picture is on display here in this foyer.?
Schmalz and Thulin’s mother, Linda, said Ryan is currently stationed in Kunsan, Korea and will transfer to Aveono, Italy in December before starting a rotation in Iraq.
Along with Linda Thulin, Ryan’s grandparents were also on-hand for the unveiling. His dad, Carl, is a nurse anesthetist at Troy Beaumont and was unable to attend due to work obligations.
‘Ryan told his parents all along that he would be a fighter pilot, see war and combat,? Schmalz said. ‘Ryan is a very determined, smart young man.?
Among his honors are the flying training award and the air education and training commanders distinguished graduate award, according to Schmalz.
Linda Thulin said her son was believed to be the first LOHS student to be nominated for the Air Force Academy, which requires a Congressional recommendation.
‘Although determined and tough, Ryan is a gentle soul,? Schmalz said. ‘Behind the hardened, combat fighting, determined schemer of a jet fighter pilot lies the heart of a gentle giant.
‘Ryan is a non-aggressive, get along with everyone, make everyone laugh and smile type of person,? she added. ‘Just look at that smile.?
Now those that stop by the Beaumont Building at 1455 S. Lapeer can see it for themselves.
