In the lobby at 1194 S. Lapeer Road, customers can find an alluring quote tucked away on a message board. It reads, ‘words fail to convey the total value of yoga. It has to be experienced.?
The quote is from BKS Iyengar, a renowned Indian yoga teacher. The message board belongs to Yoga for Life, a new Lake Orion yoga center where novices and experts alike gather for classes.
The center is tucked quietly away in a commercial strip on Lapeer Road. When customers walk through the doors they arrive in a clean, inviting lobby where they’re prompted to take of their shoes and venture into the yoga room in socks or bare feet.
‘When I envisioned the studio I wanted it to be like walking into someone’s living room,? said Heidi Peters, founder of Yoga for Life.
Heidi began studying yoga 13 years ago and has been teaching it since 2000. She earned her Doctor of Naturopathy degree in 2007.
‘Yoga is very experiential,? she said. ‘It calms the mind and relieves stress, but you have to practice.?
She notes that yoga students develop strength and flexibility.
‘I love yoga because it makes your life better,? Heidi said. ‘The biggest reason we do it is because we want to be happier.?
Cindy Anselmino works at the front desk in Yoga for Life. She’s also Cindy’s long-time friend and a yoga student at the center.
‘I can do some of the poses where you stand on your head or hands, but Heidi is the one who does the really crazy poses,? she said.
