lot of great art came out of the 1920s, a time when F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote of the Jazz Era in novels and stories and artists like Pablo Picasso were redefining aesthetic values.
But it was also a decade of speakeasies, flappers and gangsters.
The Orion Art Center has decided to meld the two by roaring into their 20th year at the Annual Snowflake Ball on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Addison Oaks Ballroom in Leonard with a 1920s theme.
‘I think everyone should get dressed up in flapper attire,? said Reggie Harrison, director of the Orion Art Center. ‘It’s a very elegant evening.?
She encourages everyone to dress up in flapper, diva or gangster garb, but the event is black tie optional.
The ball will feature art demonstrations, live music, a gourmet dinner, premium bar, silent and live auctions and, according to Harrison, a whole lot more.
‘There are many surprises in store,? she said.
Some of the items up for bid include signed sports jerseys and balls, theater tickets, art, jewelry, paintings, photography and gift certificates.
Live music will be provided by the Jump Swing Band. Dance demonstrations and on-the-spot lessons will be available for those looking to cut a rug.
A Charleston dance contest is in store, Harrison promised.
An award will also be given out at the Snowflake Ball ‘Speakeasy? to Doris Stauber, a founding member of the Orion Art Center who is being recognized as Artist of the Year (see related story on page 12).
Village residents Jim and Lisa Cummins will also be honored as Patrons of the Arts (see The Review next week for a story on the Cummins couple).
Tickets for the ball are $85. After Jan. 23, ticket prices go up to $95 per person. All the proceeds benefit the Orion Art Center.
