The Goodrich skeet team aimed for gold at the state meet on Saturday, June 20 at the Detroit Gun Club.
The varsity boys team won the state championship, while JV team won third place. Goodrich middle schoolers made an impact, as well. The second year middle school team earned silver, and the first year middle school team earned bronze.
This season was Goodrich’s fourth year with a skeet team.
‘We start with about 40 kids in the spring,? said Coach Darrell King, ‘and we take about 15 to 20 to the state shoot.?
Fifteen schools competed at the meet with 44 squads of three shooters each.
Varsity’s Alex King, Jordan Sontag and Shane Holton outshot their competition to win gold. Tyler Stambaugh, Jessica Hollingshead and Benjamin Ruff were the JV bronze victors. Grant Simcox, Audrey King and James Ruff shot as second year middle school silver medalists. First year middle school shooters Michael Stringer, Bailey Stayton and Justin Broecker earned third.
The team shoots for the national Scholastic clay target program, which promotes safety and responsible ownership of firearms.
