The Oxford grapplers took charge at last week’s district competition defeating first Holly 61-13 in the semi-finals and later Brandon 64-11 for the title.
Winning their matches against Holly with a pin were Ron Mantel at 119, Steve Storrs at 130, Kyle Rowley at 160, Tim Breyer at 171, Tony Lyssiotis at 189 and Kyle Oliver at 215.
Pinning their opponents against Brandon were Shawn Gall at 125, Kevin Nieporte at 135, Breyer at 171, Lyssiotis at 189 and Luis Gomez at 275.
In individual district competition on Saturday, Oxford had six wrestlers qualify for regional competition.
Taking first places were Breyer at 171, Lyssiotis at 215 and Gomez in the heavy weight.
Taking second places were Mantel at 119, Mike Potter at 145 and Rowley at 160.
“We bumped Lyssiotis up a weight class because there’s the national championship guy in the 189 category,” said coach Paul McDevitt. “He has a chance at the state title at 215.”
The Wildcats compete at team regionals tonight (Wednesday) against Fenton. Oxford hosts the individual regional competition this Saturday starting at 5 p.m.
