Downtown Lake Orion businesses should get rid of snow and ice accumulations two or more inches forming between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. immediately. Anything falling after 9 p.m. should be removed by 9 a.m. the following day, say Lake Orion Police.
As the adage goes ‘you know who you are? if you violate the ordinance, say police, but more importantly, customers and business neighbors know who you are. Failure to maintain a safe, approachable sidewalk could lead to a loss of sales and a loss of traffic to your business
Other village business and LO residents must remove all snow and ice accumulation within twenty-four hours of accumulation from sidewalks adjacent to any house, premises, building or lot, forming part of a public street.
Anyone not in compliance will be in violation and could be fined, and incur removal costs with the possibility of civil liability, say village officials.
Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) reminds residents and business owners that it is illegal to shovel or plow snow or ice onto any road or highway, or to deposit snow on a road or road shoulder in such a way that it blocks motorists? views of traffic.
Doing so is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $100 and/or a jail sentence of up to 90 days.
‘This creates a safety problem for motorists and creates additional work for the Road Commission,? explained RCOC Highway Maintenance Director Darryl Heid.
