The Mid-Michigan Wrestling Association held its annual state finals tournament this past Sunday at Oxford High School. The event was hosted by the Oxford Wildcat Wrestling Youth Organization through Oxford Parks and Recreation.
According to organizer and state MMWA president Doug Myer, 663 wrestlers from across the state between the ages of 6 and 14 years old competed in the event. Oxford had 22 youths qualify for the day.
“The event was a huge success due to the great parental and community involvement,” said Myer. “The Oxford boosters and Oxford-Addison Youth Assistance were great contributors.”
Four of the 22 young Oxford grapplers won medals: Jacob Peasley at 58 pounds took third place in the 8 and under age bracket, Steven Ferguson at 55 pounds took third place in the 9 and 10 age bracket, Kyle Brammer at 126 pounds took fourth place in the 11 and 12 age bracket and Mike Upshur at 80 pounds took fourth in the 13 and 14 age bracket.
The other youths who qualified for the day included Alec Smith, Marty Giannola, Tanner Hetchler, Zack Hadorn, Matt Frisch, Matt Anger, Keegan Cantara, Dylan Smith, A.J. Logan, Nick Hadorn, Rocco Teneglia, Steven Lefnear, Calvin Cavanaugh, Josh Roe, Mike Myer, Adam Hetchler, Danny Cummings and John Logan.
“I couldn’t be prouder of the kids,” said Myer. “They represented Oxford really well. We had tremendous effort from everyone.”
