Sitting with the girls first in the Flint Metro League and the boys second is just not good enough for Oxford varsity track coach Ben Kaszeta – he wants both teams to improve their 5-1.
“Our goals this year are to improve, get even better league standings with both the boys and girls at the top and get more team members qualifying for state,” said Kaszeta.
When thinking about this season’s standings, Kaszeta said the Wildcats will be watching both Fenton and Linden.
“They’re the only two teams that beat us last year,” explained Kaszeta. “So we definitely want to improve upon that.”
And with the leadership of team captains Nick Freeborn, Ryan Marsh, Adam Poppa, Megan Hickey, Caryn Inman and Meghan Shoup, that goal is even closer to becoming a reality.
“All of the kids have a hard working attitude,” Kaszeta said. “They come in everyday ready to go.”
A few key runners to look for include junior Donnie Richmond, sophomore Krysten Sylva and junior Theresa Minor.
Sylva and Minor are a sprinting duo Kaszeta said will be running two or three key relays this year, while Richmond will be attempting to hold his three-time league champion title in the mile and two-mile runs.
When talking about the Wildcat track team as a whole, Kaszeta could not say enough positive things.
“These are some phenomenal kids,” he stated. “They hardly complain and they’re very deep in every event.”
