Oxford’s varsity soccer team ended a tough, injury ridden season on Tuesday at District competition against Brandon. The team’s final record is 0-19-1 overall and 0-12 in the Flint Metro League.
On Tuesday, the Lady Wildcats loss to the Blackhawks 1-3. Oxford’s only goal was scored with 21 minutes on the clock in the second half by Christine Fortier. Jolene Patterson covered goal for the night since regular goalie Nicole Carter was out with an ankle injury.
Outside midfielder Andrea Ricketts also ended the season with an injury. She went down in the second half and came out with an injured ankle.
‘She went in for a tackle,? said coach Val Cerato, ‘and she didn’t get back up from it.?
The JV players assisting for the evening were Kira Griffin, Chelsea McIntosh, Anneliese McKeown, Christine Estannif and Melissa Brownrigg.
Earlier in the week, Oxford lost to Linden 0-3. The Lady Cats worked hard to hold Linden back and ended the first half 0-0, but once again the momentum failed.
‘Had it not been for about a nine minute period in the second half we would have held them,? said Cerato. ‘I don’t know, maybe we were out to lunch.?
Linden had 18 shots on goal compared to Oxford’s seven.
This past Thursday, Holly defeated Oxford 1-0. Holly scored the only goal 15 minutes into the first half.
‘We were just unable to generate any offense again,? explained Cerato. ‘They dominated the game.?
Katie Miner was taken out for the season after she sprained her toe during the match-up.
The Oxford soccer team is saying good-bye to one senior this year – Angela Hendley. She normally plays outside defense or outside midfielder.
‘She’s done a real nice job with her leadership,? said Cerato. ‘She’s one of those people who leads by example, and she’s set a wonderful example for these girls to follow.?
