The site of a proposed deli and coffee shop has yet to be cleared of contamination from years of leaking underground gasoline tanks.
Terri Golla, a geologist with Michigan Department of Environmental Quality in charge of the case, said the owner of the property, Larry Trepek of GL Investments, has not complied with MDEQ orders to clean up the property in April 2013.
‘The MDEQ will hold the owner responsible,? Golla said. “Whatever is worked out between the seller and buyer is something different.?
The location at 148 N. Main has been an automotive related business since around 1920. In 1991, MDEQ found the property contained four underground tanks leaking gasoline. Of those four tanks, two were installed in 1951, and the other two were installed in 1972. The tanks were removed from the property in 1992.
