Clarkston’s newest grocery store Neiman’s Family Market will proudly accept the 2014 Community Beautification and Preservation award.
Neiman’s Family Market is family owned and operated. According to the proclamation the Neiman family has a strong belief in working, living and supporting the communities they are involved in. Before opening the new store July 2013, the Neiman’s family gutted their current location. It took 18 months to demolish and rebuild the store. Thanks to their work, the location was renovated into a new store complete with bright lights, large coolers, wide aisles and an overall new fresh look and feel.
Neiman’s is also recognized for bringing in many local suppliers as well as carrying a variety of Michigan made products on their shelves.
In addition to help beautify the community with their revamped store, the market also participants in a slew of community events including Taste of Clarkston, the Holiday Light Parade and Fourth of July celebrations and much more.
Store Director John Schmidt said Neiman’s enjoys being involved in the community and looks forward to continuing to help in any way possible.
Business person of the Year Sheri Schulz not only runs three businesses under one roof, she also is known to support and contribute to many local charities and organizations. Around Christmas time for the last four years, Schulz has welcomed Santa and his Reindeer to her shops to help collect things for Toy’s for Tots.
She has also held fashion shows and many benefits to help with neuroblastoma, SCAMP, A Swan for Life, A Space to Dream, Blessings in a Backpack and helps with decorated homes for the Clarkston Home Tour. She also helps sponsor events at the Wint Nature Center.
‘I am honored to be nominated as business person of the year,? said Schulz.
The Clarkston Optimist Club has the honor of taking home the 2014 Clarkston Community Enhancement Award for hosting and supporting youth clubs, swim lessons at Deer Lake, Blessings in a Backpack, after school tutoring, library summer reading, and Independence Township’s Fourth of July parade.
Local resident John Coleman has been recognized for his leadership and contributions to youth in the community with the Adult-Youth Volunteer of the Year award. Coleman has served as Cubmaster for Cub Scout Pack 192 sponsored by the Davisburg Rotary for over six years.
According to his award, the pack has grown from 21 to 30 boys because of Coleman’s goal to ‘make the program better? for boys involved. He is also enjoys seeing the looks on kids faces when they experience something new.
Coleman introduced a new a program which allows pack members to become honorary crew members on Muskegon’s USS Silversides.
When scouts participate as honorary crew they are able to watch history come alive as they walk the decks, take command of the bridge and sleep in the berths where former military members used to serve and sleep. Coleman is also noted for his involvement in many other community service projects which make and incredible difference in the community.
