On Aug. 5, voters will decide if the Clarkston-Independence library stays open or closes. When voters take to the polls they will vote on a requested 1.25 millage which breaks down to $1.25 per $1,000 of taxable value of their property in both Independence Township and the City of Clarkston. The millage will also finalize the library reestablishment which had to be done because the law in which the library was originally established was repealed. In addition, 95 percent of the library’s funding depends on the August 5 millage. A “no” vote would mean the library would close five days later and all of the assets would be turned over to the Township. If passed, the millage would remain in place for eight years until 2021. According to the Library Millage proposal, “The estimate of the revenue the Clarkston Independence District Library will collect if the millage is approved and levied by the District Library in the 2014 calendar year is approximately $1,757,000. A small portion 0.3 percent) of the revenue collected will be subject to capture by the Sashabaw Road Corridor Improvement Authority….
