The Wolves improve upon their game every day and the hard work has paid off as they are currently ranked second in Division 1 by the Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association.
“It’s been going really well for us,” Clarkston Boys Varsity Golf Captain Brady Dice said about the season so far. “We all are playing well and connecting together which has been nice.”
The connection has helped on the course as well.
“We all want to play well,” he said. “We were able to build off of each other in the last few tournaments, we have been putting good scores together. We all want to beat each other, but we all want to play well together to make a good team – that’s what we have been doing and we have been showing it with our results.”
One result left the team excited as they scored 287 in first place at Twin Lakes Golf Club, April 26.
They were one shot away from the record of 286, set by the 1994 Wolves’ state championship team.
“We all want to shoot 285 to hold the record,” Dice said, sharing they have multiple bets with their coaches. “It’s our drive – we want to say we did it and see our coaches do the stuff we bet them.”
He added they didn’t expect to be so close to the school record but they are all excited it’s happening.
The Wolves also want to beat Detroit Catholic Central or at least come close to the Shamrocks, who are ranked first in the division.
“We all have the drive and motivation to get better,” said Dice, adding they all know all five golfers for DCC are committed to playing golf in college.
“We push to do whatever we can to do better than them,” he said. “As soon as we are done with team practice we all go practice someplace else together because we know to do to our best, to be No. 1, we need to put in all the extra effort.”
The Wolves will be able to see Detroit Catholic Central at the Oakland County Meet at Pontiac Country Club on May 17.
“It will give us more confidence going into regionals,” Dice said.
The Wolves practice at different courses throughout the week to help them for the next tournament they go into.
“You learn from each course you can take to the next one,” Dice said. “Every swing is different but you are able to build off swings from different shots you have. Playing all the different courses gives us a variety of different shots.”
Most recently they finished in second place at the Orchard Lake Country Club Tournament, May 1.
They shot a 301, just six away from Detroit Catholic Central who took first place with 295. Dice led the team with a 72, one shot over par and he finished second place Individual Overall Medalist.
Senior Noah Sampson hit a 75; sophomore Harry Bowman, 76; sophomore Patrick Deardorff, 78; and sophomore Noah Bridgeman, 82.
Dice joined the team during his freshman year and has been captain for his junior and seniors years and hopes he can leave behind the legacy of leadership and focus for years to come.
“I know I try my best to make sure everyone is staying on top of it, everyone is out there to win, keep the attitude they can play well even if they hit a bad shot,” he said. “I have picked that up from the previous captains.”
