The Oxford Lady Cagers had an incredible evening on Tuesday against Brandon – making up for two losses the week before against Flushing and Linden.
On Oct. 29, The Lady Cats lost to Flushing 59-37. Megan Stumph led Oxford in points with 13. Against Linden, Oxford didn’t fair much better, losing the game 55-35. Ally Zonsius had nine points and Megan Bono had eight.
However, the ladies kicked things into gear on Tuesday with an outstanding, but close win. During the first half, the Wildcats led Brandon easily, shooting twice as much and ending the first half 18-9. The Blackhawk coach replaced his entire floor more than once, but Brandon couldn’t seem to keep control.
After the half, the Blackhawks came back with a renewed energy, while Oxford seemed to slow down. The ladies struggled to maintain control of the ball. At 2:44 the ladies lost their lead and Brandon pulled ahead 21-18, but Coach Becky Graves wasn’t going to let the Wildcats fall apart on the court.
During the fourth period, Oxford picked up the pace and the teams traded the lead back and fourth. With 16 seconds left on the clock, the score was 34-36, and Jenni Rhodes was fouled. She went one for two on the line bringing the score to 355-36.
Coach Graves called a timeout and sent the Wildcats back in to make a hard drive for the basket. The ladies quickly ran over Brandon to reclaim the ball and began shooting with every open space. Finally, with less than five seconds remaining, Meghan Stumph came through with a 2-pointer that won the game 37-36.
Oxford stands 7-10 as the Lady Cats prepare to take on Clio tomorrow (Thursday) at home.
