Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputies spent a little over two hours hunting for an injured man who ran away from an M-24 collision that occurred around 9:15 a.m. on Friday.
According to Deputy John Dobrowiak, Christopher Roskey, 19, of Imlay City, left the scene of the accident where he supposedly struck Christopher Williams’ white Chevy truck from behind. The sheriff’s report states that Williams, a Davison resident, had been stopped on M-24 to turn left onto Oakdell Rd., which runs beside the Shell Station, when the vehicles collided.
After waiting briefly at the scene, Roskey reportedly took off westbound on Oakdell Rd. towards Glaspie and Olive roads. Upon arriving at the scene, Deputy Dobrowiak was told the fleeing individual was injured, and he immediately left to scour the surrounding neighborhood for the responsible.
Finding no trace of the suspect, Dobrowiak returned to the scene of the accident and found the license plate of Roskey’s blue 1988 Chevy pickup on the floorboard of the vehicle’s passenger side. Running the plate through LEIN showed that the vehicle was registered to a female Joslin Rd. resident.
Dobrowiak said he then learned the truck was being used by a Lake Orion business as a company vehicle, and the business owners were able to provide him with the name of the driver. Another search through LEIN showed that the fleeing suspect had several out-of-county warrants standing including breaking and entering, aggravated assault and probation violation.
Five to six deputies began looking through local neighborhoods for the 19-year-old. Eventually, the Oakland County Sheriff’s helicopter joined in the search.
“During the search we were advised by dispatch that a lady on Augusta had called in and had contact with the responsible,” said Dobrowiak.
According to the Augusta Rd. witness, Roskey had supposedly used her phone to try and find a ride. The witness said the man called his father, mother and finally a friend who works at a business on Metamora Rd. near Plexus Rd.
Sheriff’s deputies left their search and made contact with the friend at the Metamora Rd. business. The individual said he did pick up the fleeing subject, and the last time he saw the man was in the business’ parking lot.
“I found the responsible reclined back in the passenger’s seat of a red Chevy Cavalier in the parking lot,” said Dobrowiak.
Roskey was cuffed, searched and brought back to the Oxford Substation. The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Department was contacted regarding the man’s warrants and American Medical Response was called to the station.
According to the sheriff’s report, Roskey was cited for leaving the scene of an accident and failure to report an accident, both misdemeanors, as well as careless driving. He was transported by AMR to Lapeer Regional Hospital for a leg injury.
This reporter later learned that the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Department was going to take Roskey into custody after he received treatment. Both hospital officials and hospital security were contacted by an Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputy with the Oxford Substation about this arrangement; however, Roskey was not brought into custody by the Lapeer department as of Tuesday.
