15 years ago – 2004
“Groundbreaking makes it official” After years of discussion, studies and debate, the widening of the Sashabaw Road from two lanes to four lanes officially began with a groundbreaking ceremony.
“Handwriting curriculum to return to old methods” Geri Moore, executive director for elementary education, and Jayne Bannister, a Springfield Plains Elementary teacher, presented a new approach to handwriting with some old twists to the Clarkston Community Schools Board of Education.
“Lajoie, L’Amoreaux win wrestling state titles” Tony Lajoie and Braden L’Amoreaux proved they were best in the state as they won the state title in their weight classes at the MHSAA Division 1 Wrestling Individual State Championship. Lajoie took the crown in the 130-pound weight class and L’Amoreaux in the 140-pound weight class.
25 years ago – 1994
“Thumbs up! Proposal A wins big” Michigan voters said yes to lower property taxes in exchange for higher sales tax. In Independence Township, 6,958 voters said yes, and in Springfield Township 2,480 voters said yes.
“Students takes first” Pine Knob Elementary student Curtis Barclay won first place in his age division at the the state level in the 1994 International Aviation Art Contest.
“Wolves ready to tangle with Huskies” The Clarkston Boys Varsity Basketball team won the district championship with a 50-47 victory over Romeo. They won the game in the last few seconds off a 3-pointer from Tim Wasilk.
50 years ago – 1969
“Trial test eases code” The Clarkston High School administration, with the approval from the Board of Education, announced a two-week trial period during which the girls were permitted to wear dress slacks to class.
“Grass fires raze fields” Independence Township Fire Department received 35 calls and 30 of them were grass fires. Almost every grass fire was started by burning trash which got out of control.
“Around the town” It was a happy sixth birthday for Chris Dawley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Dawley. Nine of his friends were invited to his home on Dale Court to help him celebrate.
