The Wolves opened the season with three wins following short practice time after tryouts last week.
“We are trying to figure things out with limited practices,” said Tim Wasilk, head coach for Clarkston Boys Varsity Basketball. “I am happy with our team right now. We have some things to work on. We are early in the season – we have some good things and we have some bad things.”
Clarkston posted a 58-37 win over Waterford Mott in their home opener on Friday.
The Corsairs opened the night with five points from Zeek Price with a field goal and a basket.
Junior Wolf Nathan Steinman closed the gap with a 3-pointer and junior Zach Austin tied the score off his basket.
The Wolves took the lead after junior Keegan Wasilk scored on his first basket of the night, starting a back and forth battle for the lead between the two teams.

“Waterford Mott came out and did a great job penetrating on us and getting in the gaps,” said Wasilk. “We were over pressuring them a bit. We adjusted what we were doing defensively and backed off a little bit. I thought that helped us out with changing the momentum of the game. We jumped off early.”
The Wolves went on a 10-point run starting with a basket from Keegan with three minutes remaining in the first quarter. Mott made one point on the free throw line to end the quarter, 20-13.
“We had a nice first quarter and in the second quarter we changed the momentum of the game,” Wasilk said.
Keegan led the team with 22 points, ten rebounds and seven assists. Steinman had 13 points and six rebounds and Mike DePillo had six points and seven rebounds.
“Nate has really worked hard on his game in the off season,” said Wasilk. “He stepped up for us. DePillo is a good inside presence this year with Luke Scherler. Mike rebounds really well. It’s tough to keep him off the glass.
“We played some more kids than we did last night,” Wasilk added. “It was good to see some kids come in who haven’t played to contribute and do some things. It was a good team win.”
The Wolves opened with a 57-43 win over Farmington, Feb. 11. They were down two points going into the second half, 21-19, but jumped to a 38-31 lead as they finished the third quarter.
“The first half was rough as far as being our first game,” said Wasilk. “The first half the kids were just trying to find their comfort zone. We made some big shots – Steinman had four 3s. Keegan did a great job blocking one of their better players in the second half. We had good contributions all over the floor. We had six guys score six points or more. It was good to see.”
Steinman led with 18 points and six rebounds. DePillo had nine points and ten rebounds; Austin had 11 points and four assists; Harris had seven points and eight rebounds; Wasilk had six points, eight rebounds and seven assists; and Scherler had six points.
The Wolves finished the week with a 50-38 win over Troy Athens. Wasilk led the team with 17 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
Steinman had ten points, six rebounds and five steals. DePillo had nine points, eight assists and six rebounds;Austin had six points, four steals and four rebounds.
The Wolves host Farmington on Friday and Detroit Cass Tech on Monday. Freshman play at 4 p.m., JV at 5:30 p.m., varsity at 7 p.m. The Wolves are on the road on Saturday as they play Groves.
