Kathleen Marie Coates died peacefully in her home at age 92 on July 9, 2021 in Melbourne, Florida.
Kay was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, James Coates, (who had recently passed this last March), her parents William and Grace Katke, and her brother William Katke, Jr. (Barbara). She is survived by her sister Nancy Ungerman, and all five of her children, James C. Coates II (Susan), Michael W. Coates (Liz), Kathleen A. Bush, Tamara L. Bourgeau, and Patricia G. Gray (Marc), 17 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Kathleen, “Kay” for all that knew her, was born in Ferndale, Michigan in September of 1928. She resided on their farm in Clarkston the majority of her life. You’ve heard the saying, behind every great man there is a greater woman? She was the mold. She was a beautiful caring supportive wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and trustworthy friend to so very many wonderful people. She had a contagious laugh, a great sense of humor, a caring soul and touched everyone she met with her grace.
She was a proud graduate of Michigan State College in 1952, “Go State!” and was an active member of Clarkston United Methodist Church where she served as the historian for a period of time. She was also a participant of the Lakewood Park Methodist Church, Ft. Pierce, Florida.
Kay was a loving mother and homemaker raising her five children. On the farm, she was an avid gardener, animal lover and raised horses too. She enjoyed riding and was an active member of the Oakland County Saddle Club and spent many years helping the local 4-H club, The Clarkston Wranglers in which 4 of her 5 children participated! She volunteered in many of her children’s PTAs and school activities. In 1985-6 she was a local manager and fund raiser for the restoration of the Statue of Liberty.
Memorial services for both Kay and Jim will be on Friday, September 10 (their 72 anniversary). We will begin with a private family service at the Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, Michigan. Then we will have a memorial service for all family and friends that wish to attend at Clarkston United Methodist Church 6600 Waldon Rd, Village of Clarkston, MI 48346 at 11:30am with a luncheon immediately following.
Both Kay and Jim will be sorely missed by all friends and family
