25 years ago – 1996
“Wenger, Wallace and Rosso get first terms” Independence Township voters elected challenger Jim Wenger for treasurer and new trustees Larry Rosso and Neil Wallace as 4,777 of 20,216 registered voters went to the polls.
“Let the games begin!” Neighbors Veronica Johnstone and Regina Eaton organized the Hillview Olympics, a pint-sized Olympics for the children in their Independence Township subdivision.
“First in their class” The father-daughter duo of John and Lisa Gebus, from Independence Township, came in first place in their boat class (PHRF G) in the Bayview Mackinac Race.
50 years ago – 1971
“Playground Olympics ends summer program” A Playground Olympics was scheduled to end the activities at playgrounds in the summer program by the Independence Township Recreation Department. Events included bike races, 4-square, running and more.
“Jaycee of month” Louis Jaenichen was presented with the Jaycee of the Month award during the Clarkston Area Jaycee’s July meeting.
“Around the township” Vacationing in Guelph, Ontario, Canada were the Peter Lektzians of Plum Street. They visited Peter’s great uncle, Mr. and Mrs. H. Bedrosian. On the return trip home through the Thumb area of Michigan they visited old Clarkston neighbors, Dick and Nora Berry.
75 years ago – 1946
“Ladies’ Aid enjoys picnic” The Ladies’ Aid of the Andersonville church enjoyed a picnic at the home of Mrs. Fred Ware on Big Lake Road. They enjoyed dinner at noon, which was followed by the regular business meeting.
“Clarkston Motor Sales makes bow to public today” Clarkston Motor Sales, dealers in Chrysler and Plymouth Motor Cars and International Trucks, formally opened their showroom and garage to the public, which was location in a brand new, modern building at 32 South Main Street.
“Clarkston locals” Arthur Clark, who had been attending summer school at Central State College in Mount Pleasant expected to return this weekend. He planned to return to Mount Pleasant in a few weeks to start his senior year at the college.
