The Oakland County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents to be on the look out for two or three men in a truck perpetrating a roofing scam.
According to Oxford substation commander Lt. Al Whitefield, two young Hispanic males driving a red pickup truck tried to defraud a woman on Spezia of $432 a few weeks ago.
The men told the woman she needed some patch work done on her roof and for $12 per gallon of tar, they could repair it. She agreed and the men went up on the roof.
“They weren’t up there long enough to smoke a cigarette” much less apply 36 gallons of tar, when they came down and told the woman she owed them $432, the lieutenant said.
Whitefield said the woman was suspicious and told them they would have to call her husband about the matter. The men then told her if she gave them $200, they would “call it even.”
She again refused to pay and offered to give them her husband’s phone number at work.
At that point, the men jumped in their truck and took off.
A couple on Baldwin Road fell victim to a similar roofing scam last year and paid three fake roofers $750, according to Whitefield. “We think it’s the same guys,” he said.
Residents are warned to beware and on the lookout for two or three young Hispanic males in a red pickup truck.
Detective John Robertson said it’s “very important” residents obtain a license plate number.
Anyone with any information relating to this matter should contact the Oxford substation from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at (248) 969-3077 or call the sheriff’s department in Pontiac at (248) 858-4950.
