25 years ago – 1996
“More space, equity in Monday’s election” The district was optimist the hope was portable classrooms would be a thing of the past following Monday’s special school board election for a $52.5 million bond.
“Calcote Country to close Dec. 30” Leta Calcote announced retirement from her tiny shop, Calcote Country, a Main Street fixture since 1986 which sold fine American folk art. The move was designed to allow Leta to spend more time with her family, including her husband, Sammy, two children, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
“Batty for bats” Third graders in Karen Steele’s class at Clarkston Elementary became walking, talking encyclopedias after learning about seven varieties of bats living in Michigan.
50 years ago – 1971
“Township appraisal begins” Reassessment of Birdland Subdivision off Maybee Road in Independence Township began. It was commissioned during July by the township board for the cost of $69,800.
“Cheerleader Kim Blasey is new Junior Miss” A standing room only crowd saw Kim Blasey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Blasey of Holcomb Road, chosen out of 19 contestants as Clarkston’s Junior Miss on Saturday night.
“Around the township” Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Beattie of Kingfisher Lane entertained Mrs. Beattie’s family for Thanksgiving dinner.
75 years ago – 1946
“John Adams is host to Explorer Scouts” John Adams hosted the Explorer Scouts and their leader, Otto Ivonen, at a venison dinner at his home on Buffalo Street. The venison was from the buck John shot when he was up north the first week of the hunting season. The group had fun at the table telling deer stories.
“Denny Lee Galligan is three years old” Denny Lee Galligan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Galligan turned three-years-old on Dec. 1. His mother honored him with a birthday party. The children had a grand time and Denny received many birthday gifts.
“Clarkston locals” Mrs. Elizabeth Drake, Mr. and Mrs. F. Atkins and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Drake and daughter, Mary, were Thanksgiving dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Manly Drake in Pontiac.
