The Wolves celebrated their seniors and a big win over Troy Athens in their last home dual meet, 103-80.
“Fantastic job,” said Clarkston Boys Swim and Dive Head Coach Amber Miller after the meet, Jan. 20. “On paper Athens was the faster team. Our boys stepped up and they wanted it. Senior Night gives you some extra motivation. They just dug deep. Our team is making a tradition out of beating odds and coming out against tough challenges and riding above.”
For individual events, in the 50-yard freestyle, Owen Guzal in first place, finishing in the time of 24.52; Charles Rowe, fifth, 27.01; 100-yard butterfly, Andrew Musson, first, 1:03.14; Jeffrey Ellingsworth, second, 1:07.86; Craig Popiolek, fourth, 1:10.46; 100-yard freestyle, Owen Guzal, third, 55.30; Trent Schmeling, fifth, 1:04.69; 100-yard backstroke, Zachary Yamanoha, first, 57.69; Benjamin Guzal, fourth, 1:11.78; 100-yard breaststroke, Canyon Roodbeen, second, 1:09.81; Rowe, fourth, 1:20.03; 200-yard freestyle, Musson, first, 2:04.57; Ellingsworth, third, 2:12.05; 200-yard IM, Yamanoha, first, 2:02.51; Roodbeen, fourth, 2:25.81; Benjamin Guzal, fifth, 2:35.78; 500-yard freestyle, Andrew Craig, first, 6:13.32; Popiolek, second, 6:40.65; Matthew Boor, third, 6:41.08.
“We are happy to celebrate a win for the seniors,” said Miller. “This is the part of the season they get tired and sluggish. They had some great swims tonight.”
For the 200-yard medley relay, the team of Yamanoha, Roodbeen, Musson and Owen Guzal took first place in the time of 1:50.77; and the team of Ellingsworth, Rowe, Popiolek and Boor took third place, 2:00.77. The 200-yard freestyle team took second place, 1:48.86; and the 400-yard freestyle team, first, 3:43.84.
For 1-meter diving, Lucas Breeden finished in first place with score of 142.35; James Lazar, second, 123.80; and Jon George, third, 101.75.
Miller added divers have qualified for regionals as well as Yamanoha qualified for the state meet in the 100-yard butterfly and is close in his other events.
“He has come a long way,” Miller said. “He works hard, but also Zach coaches his fellow teammates, the younger guys and gives them pointers. His is really looking out. He is all about the team. All of our seniors take the team leadership and really look out for the younger guys. They are a family. It always comes through. They really care. We are thankful for our swim and dive team.”
The Wolves defeated Holly and Brandon-Goodrich last Thursday.
They scored 72.6 points as Holly scored 67 points and Brandon-Goodrich had 59.6 points.
For individual events, in the 50-yard freestyle, Popiolek in first place in time of 26.32; Owen Guzal, second, 26.43; Rowe, third, 26.92; 100-yard backstroke, Ellingsworth, second, 1:09.31; Schmeling, fourth, 1:13.41; Benjamin Guzal, fifth, 1:16.51; 100-yard butterfly, Yamanoha, first, 52.95; Popiolek, third, 1:07.58; 100-yard freestyle, Owen Guzal, first, 57.27; Boor, second, 1:00.87; Schmeling, fifth, 1:03.78; 100-yard breaststroke, Roodbeen, first, 1:10.57; Rowe, third,1:20.23; 200-yard freestyle, Roodbeen, first, 2:01.69; Ellingsworth, fourth, 2:07.87; 200-yard IM, Yamanoha, first, 2:02.13; Musson, third, 2:20.03; and 500-yard freestyle, Musson, first, 5:33.52; and Benjamin Guzal, fourth, 6:31.42.
For 1-meter diving after six dives, Michael George finished in first place with 218.60 points; Lucas Breedan, second, 190.80; and James Lazar, third, 119.45.
The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Yamanoha, Musson, Roodbeen and Owen Guzal finished in first place in the time of 3:45.65 as the team of Ellingsworth, Schmeling, Popiolek and Boor finished in second, 4:14.47. The team of Yamanoha, Roodbeen, Musson and Owen Guzal also finished in first place in the 200-yard medley relay, 1:55.93.
The team of Rowe, Boor, Popiolek and Benjamin Guzal finished in second place in the 200-freestyle relay, 1:50.92.
The Wolves shift their focus to the Oakland County Meet this Friday and Saturday. Then, they host the league meet, Feb. 23-25.
