There are many reasons why the Lake Orion High School baseball program has become one of the best in Southeast Michigan.
But perhaps no reason is bigger than the varsity team’s feeder program, which produces ready-made high school ballplayers by the time players reach their freshman year.
This week marks the second of two week-long sessions for the Dragon Baseball Camp at Friendship Park, led by varsity coach Andy Schramek and some of his current and former players at LOHS.
‘One of my goals has been to know all of the freshmen by the time they get to the high school level,? said Schramek, who had about 50 ballplayers signed up for each session.
The first session ran from June 26-30 and the second week began on July 10, with players ranging in age from eight to 14.
‘In the morning we do drill work and in the afternoon we play games,? Schramek said.
The coach noted that a home run derby and some trophy presentations take place on the last day of the camp.
‘I’m real happy with the turnout we get from the community,? Schramek said, noting he was pleased with how well the older players worked with the soon-to-be high school stars.
