25 years ago – 1999
City moving ahead with new building plans: Representatives of the Clarkston City Council planned to move ahead to start the process to solicit bids for work on the city hall building. The city’s building committee was given the OK to move ahead with the plans after getting an idea what it was the council was looking for. One of the options the council seemed to be in favor was reconfiguring the current building to include more office space and an extra parking bay for the city’s Department of Public Works.
‘It’s for the birds!’: A bird house building project at Clarkston’s six elementaries sponsored by the Clarkston Farm and Garden Club turned out to be a bigger success than club members expected as students created nearly 300 birdhouses.
Wolves conquer Martians for first win: The Clarkston Girls Varsity Soccer team struggled but got the first win of the season, beating Goodrich at home, 3-2. During the game Lauren Welbourn scored her first goal of her career. Kara Bergkoetter scored her second goal of the season, and Angela Humphreys had the third goal in the win.
50 years ago – 1974
Art Council wins village recognition: The area’s newly formed Art Council, recognized by the Independence Township Board the prior week, had gained formal recognition from the Clarkston Village Council. Joan Kopietz, temporary chairman of the council, said confirmation had been received from the Michigan Arts Council that the Michigan Artrain will pull into Clarkston Depot some time in the fall.
Millage ok shouldn’t increase tax: The issue which Clarkston Board of Education before would take before the voters in June shouldn’t cause any appreciable increase in local tax bills, according to Dr. Leslie F. Greene, superintendent to the district.
The millstream: Mr. and Mrs. Hawley Skarritt of Miller Road returned from a month’s vacation in Florida. On the way home they stopped in Macon, Georgia, to visit Dick and Becky Spohn, who had recently moved there. They reported all was fine at the Spohn’s home, with everyone enjoying their new life.
75 years ago – 1949
Money being raised for school library: Mrs. Robert Osgood and Mrs. James Glennie entertained at the Osgood home on N. Main Street, at a plastic demonstration, with proceeds going to the elementary school library. The group of 16 were amazed to see the many articles now being made for almost every room in the home.
Clarkston swamps Country Day: The Clarkston High School Baseball team traveled to Detroit Country Day where they won their second league game. Clarkston opened the game by scoring two runs in the first inning. In the second inning, ten Clarkston batters faced the Country Day pitcher and collected six runs on two walks and two hits, including Bob Fell’s first home run with the bases loaded. He had another home run with the bases loaded in the third inning.
Clarkston locals: Miss Patricia Ann Hoyt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl L. Hoyt of Clarkston, would sing in the soprano section of the Albion College acapella choir on its 1th annual spring tour. At the time, Miss Hoyt was a sophomore at Albion.
