25 years ago – 1999
Young at heart: If Jim and Marge Bohlman needed work, they would be hired at the North Pole. However they were content to play Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus for just three days each year. The two would be making an appearance at the Family Holiday Fest at Bay Court Park. Sponsored by the Independence Parks and Recreation Department, the experience was one the Bohlmans truly enjoyed. Joe’s role as the Jolly Old Elf began as sort of a last-minute for breakfast and then Lunch with Santa.
Gift-ed kids: Close to 250 area elementary kids gave their creative skills a try at the annual Super Holiday Gift Saturday at Springfield Plains Elementary. For three hours, kids, teachers and scores of volunteers put together crafty ornaments and other holiday gift items for their families. All seven elementary schools participated in the event.
Wolves rally from 18 down to beat Rochester: As bad as the start was for the Clarkston Wrestling team, the finish was equally great. The Wolves dug themselves out of deficits of 18-0 and 24-6 before rallying for a 48-33 win over the Falcons at Rochester High School. It was a key win for Clarkston – the first in league competition and first dual meet win of the season.

50 years ago – 1974
New signal crosses motorists: Oakland County’s latest four-way stop intersection converted to a high traffic control device was at the corner of Sashabaw and Clarkston-Orion roads. The new light blinked amber on Sashabaw Road and red on Clarkston-Orion Road. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Department urged a stop-and-go light be installed at the corner because of the difficulties deputies had in controlling the Pine Knob traffic.
Girls enter state quarterfinals: The girls basketball team from Clarkston High School played successfully through another week of Michigan High School Athletic Association tournament action. They won a regional championship with victories over Davison, 30-25, and Clawson, 47-42, to advance to the quarterfinal game.
The mill stream: Mrs. Andrew Wright, of 6290 South Main Street, celebrated her 80th birthday with a trip to Lansing to hear her granddaughter, Pat Saile, sing in the University Christian Church’s Christmas Cantata program. Pat was a senior at Michigan State University, majoring in social science.

75 years ago – 1949
Clarkston wins over Oxford: Clarkston Boys Varsity Basketball defeated Oxford on Tuesday night, 47-26. Clarkston opened the game in a very impressive fashion and had a 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter, leading 14-4. But, by the end of the second quarter the teams were tied at 18. It was the fourth quarter Clarkston prevailed to win by 21 points.
Clarkston locals: A guest for a few days at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Sharpe was their little grandson, Robert Linman of Fowlerville. Robert stayed in Clarkston until his mother returned home from the McPherson Hospital in Howell with his little sister, Janet Marie, who was born Monday evening.
The Hilltopper: Fifth-graders were making an exhibit of the various products of the United States in geography class. They had fruit, vegetables, coal, iron, copper, brass, zinc, oil, several animals poultry, toy cars, trucks, buses, airplanes and grains. The students wrote several business letters to several states to get things for the exhibit. They shared it was fun receiving samples in the mail.
